"Comprehensive approach needed": Ignat explained the situation with the supply of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine
Ukraine is not yet prepared to utilize Western fighter jets
Partners are prepared to supply F-16 multi-role fighters to Ukraine; however, Ukraine must complete preparatory work to deploy them effectively against the occupiers.
Yuriy Ihnat, the spokesperson for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, conveyed this information during a telethon on January 25. He explained, "Our partners are ready to provide us with equipment. The question is whether everything is ready for it to work in Ukraine."
Ihnat emphasized that a comprehensive approach is necessary for the deployment, adoption, and combat use of F-16s, considering pilots, infrastructure, engineers, and other essential factors.
"Multi-role aircraft are aviation complexes. It is necessary to take a comprehensive approach to their deployment in Ukraine, adoption, and combat use," stated the spokesperson.
He noted that while F-16s might already be in Ukraine geographically, the Armed Forces require the fighters to effectively combat the enemy.
"Of course, we could consider various statements by European leaders that we are ready to hand over the aircraft to you. Well, 'already transferred' means that we simply have them territorially. This is not the option that Ukraine needs. We need them to hit the occupier from the air," Ihnat explained.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Pentagon anticipates that Ukraine will receive the first F-16s, along with infrastructure and spare parts, in 2024.
Earlier, Yuriy Ihnat mentioned that Ukrainian Armed Forces pilots are already flying F-16s with instructors. The training process is progressing as planned, and various factors influence the training timeline, he clarified.
Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk highlighted that the introduction of F-16 aircraft is a priority in the development of the Ukrainian Air Force, and other opportunities to enhance the aviation's combat potential are also under consideration.
