At least 100 fighters of Ukrainian intelligence special forces fought against Wagner PMC in Sudan: WSJ reveals details

At least 100 Ukrainian intelligence special forces fighters fought in Sudan

At least 100 special forces soldiers of the Ukrainian intelligence took part in combat operations against the Wagner PMC in Sudan. During the fighting, they killed two enemy mercenaries and captured another.

Ukraine sent its military to Sudan at the request of the head of state, Abdel Fatah al-Burhan. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal.

It is noted that last summer, the head of Sudan appealed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by phone to ask for help.

Thus, from August 2023 to early 2024, fighters of the Timur special unit of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine were actively operating in Sudan. The first unit consisted of about a hundred people, and in November it was replaced by the second unit. The presence of Ukrainian special forces in Sudan is currently unclear.

Ukrainian soldiers took part in combat operations against the rebel Rapid Reaction Force (RRF), which was supported by the private military company Wagner. The Ukrainians also used attack drones, which had never been used in Sudan before.

During one of the battles, Ukrainian fighters killed two Wagner mercenaries and captured the third, according to the commander of one of the units. This happened during a battle in the city of Omdurman, which is located opposite Khartoum on the opposite bank of the Nile.

According to the officer, Ukrainian soldiers also killed more than ten Sudanese soldiers who fought on the side of the private military company Wagner. The Ukrainian military itself did not suffer any losses during operations in Sudan, according to their commanders.

Over the past few weeks, the Sudanese army, which is fighting on the side of Abdel Fatah al-Burhan, has regained control of a large part of Omdurman, which is the first significant success of the military during the confrontation with the Rapid Response Forces. Military experts attribute this, in particular, to the use of attack drones.

Earlier, the head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, revealed the purpose of the DIU's special operations in Sudan. Ukrainian special services have increasingly begun to conduct operations in the African country and their main goal is to eliminate the enemy wherever possible.

In early February, the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine captured mercenaries of the Russian PMC Wagner in Sudan. They confessed that they had been sent to the country to overthrow the government. "Wagner's men were also engaged in recruiting local Sudanese population into their ranks.

In November 2023, videos were also published online showing Ukrainian special forces "hunting" for mercenaries of the Kremlin's terrorist PMC Wagner in Sudan.
