A monument to Hero Matsievsky was unveiled in Nizhyn
A monument to the Hero of Ukraine Oleksandr Matsievsky was unveiled in Nizhyn, Chernihiv region. In early March 2023, a video appeared showing him being shot by the Russian occupiers after saying "Glory to Ukraine!"
Matsievsky's monument became the centerpiece of a memorial in honor of the defenders who died in the Russian-Ukrainian war. An OBOZ.UA correspondent reported this from the scene.
The 2.2-meter-high sculpture is made of bronze. It is also planned to create a memorial complex in Nizhyn. It will be built on a round red granite with a diameter of 16 meters, and the black granite segments of the Cossack cross will bear the names of the fallen Heroes.
To date, 158 defenders from Nizhyn have been killed at the front since the beginning of the full-scale war.
During the unveiling of the monument, a fellow soldier said that Oleksandr Matsievsky performed a special act by saying "Glory to Ukraine!" to the enemy in the eyes.
As a reminder, Russian terrorists who came to Ukraine with the war have shot an unarmed Ukrainian soldier, Oleksandr Matsievsky. The Russians shot the soldier after he said the words "Glory to Ukraine!". At the same time, the invaders filmed their crime.
According to OBOZ.UA:
- In his last conversation with his mother, Matsievsky promised her that he would never surrender. On March 12, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had awarded Matsievsky the title of Hero of Ukraine.
- It is known that Matsievsky was a citizen of Moldova. According to the SBU, the soldier was killed on December 30, 2022, near the village of Krasna Hora, Donetsk region. The body was returned home in February 2023.
- Matsievsky's commander said that the Hero, together with his group, went on a mission on that fateful day and engaged in combat with superior enemy forces. All five Ukrainian soldiers in the group were killed.
