25 Leopard 1A5 tanks and more: what aid Germany may deliver in Ukraine in 2024

Pistorius confirms Germany's plans to at least double funding for military aid to Ukraine in 2024

Germany plans to spend at least 8 billion euros to help Ukraine in 2024. The decision, which has already been agreed upon in principle by the ruling coalition, may be adopted by the German parliament next week.

Plans to increase spending on support for Ukraine were confirmed by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius at a meeting of EU defense ministers on November 14. In particular, the German defense concern Rheinmetall has already begun preparing 25 Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks, five Bergepanzer 2 armored evacuation vehicles, and two driver training tanks for Ukraine on behalf of the German government, which will be delivered to Ukraine in 2024.

On November 14, Pistorius confirmed Berlin's intention to allocate €8 billion for military aid to Ukraine and another €2 billion for commitment allocations. According to him, this will be a strong signal of the unwavering support that Germany provides to Ukraine.

"Yes, eight billion can come. I hope that they will come, it is a good initiative... The Parliament, of course, has to make a decision next week," Pistorius said.

The head of the German defense ministry also called on other partners to help Ukraine more.

Initially, the German Ministry of Finance provided only €4 billion in the federal budget for 2024 for military assistance to Kyiv. However, almost all of the money was allocated to support projects that had already been promised.

The parties in Germany's ruling coalition have currently reached an agreement in principle to increase spending on aid to Ukraine to €8 billion.

Meanwhile, the German defense concern Rheinmetall confirmed that it has started preparing tanks and armored evacuation vehicles for the Ukrainian army on behalf of the German government.

"The Ukrainian government has signed a contract with Rheinmetall to supply Leopard 1 systems, including 25 Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks, five Bergepanzer 2 armored recovery vehicles and two driver training tanks. The order, funded by Germany and worth several million euros, also includes training, logistics, spare parts, maintenance and other support services," the concern said in a statement.

Rheinmetall added that deliveries will take place in 2024. The Leopard 1s scheduled for delivery are currently undergoing major repairs at the group's plants.

Rheinmetall also reminded that the concern, on behalf of the government, recently began work on the supply of 80 Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine. Most of them have already "proved their resilience".

The concern is currently waiting for a new order for the supply of another 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, which are ready for operation. In late 2023 and early 2024, five Caracal airborne vehicles are scheduled to be delivered.

At the same time, the governments of the Netherlands and Denmark have financed the delivery of 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks in 2024.

"In addition to equipment, Rheinmetall helps the Ukrainian armed forces with ammunition, drones, medical supplies, etc.", the company emphasized.

Earlier that day, it was reported that Germany had allocated a new military aid package to Ukraine. It includes 10 Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks, 14 Bandvagn 206 all-terrain vehicles and five Carrier Warthog all-terrain vehicles.

The Germans will also provide our defenders with a Wisent 1 demining vehicle and 14 Ground Observer 12 radar stations.

As for ammunition, the Armed Forces will receive 1,020 155-mm shells and 1.4 million rounds of ammunition for firearms.

The package includes 10,000 Vector drones for reconnaissance, three patrol vehicles, 16 Zetros trucks, four HX81 tank tractors with trailers, 16 Zetros trucks and 13 MAN heavy-duty trucks.
