Rodnina speaks out about Russian sports

Three-time Olympic champion Irina Rodnina has criticized the Kremlin's propaganda mouthpieces that talk about the greatness of Russian sports. The State Duma deputy, who was previously demanded to be expelled to the United States, called it impossible to assess the real level of athletes from the Russian Federation.

Rodnina said this in a commentary to the Sport24 portal. The former figure skater, who won the Games in Sapporo 72, Innsbruck 76 and Lake Placid 80, emphasized that in the context of isolation, it is incorrect to compare Russian athletes with rivals from abroad.

"How can we assess our level of development in sports? We can't! Do we broadcast international competitions? No, that's it. We will be able to find out our level only after we return to international tournaments. Why be disingenuous and say that we are the best in everything? We don't know what we can and can't do now. I don't follow all sports, but I can't evaluate even the ones I'm interested in without international indicators. What's the point of talking about success if the actual event hasn't happened yet," Rodnina said.
