"Unwanted political overtones": UEFA banned Ukrainians from showing a banner reminding of Russian aggression at the match with Italy
The European Football Union (UEFA) did not approve Ukrainian fans' action in support of the country at the national team's match against Italy in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Our compatriots intended to hang a large banner with the inscription NO FOOTBALL EURO WITHOUT UKRAINE, but were categorically refused.
Famous journalist and volunteer Mykola Vasylkov told OBOZ.UA about this. According to him, the main attributes of the large poster were the Ukrainian trident, a ball with the Euro 2024 emblem, and missiles flying at it. However, UEFA saw "undesirable political overtones" in this.
"We were ready to remove the inscription and leave only the ball with the Euro 2024 logo and the shield with the Ukrainian trident. But UEFA is a categorical, or I would say cowardly organization. They are afraid of us, of our situation, afraid to be against Russia, even just against the war, which is meaningless in nature. UEFA forbade our national team to even hold a minute of silence before the starting whistle to honor the victims. How can this happen? You kill people, and you have to keep silent about it because, as they often write on Facebook, it suddenly 'violates the standards of our community', Vasylkov commented on the situation.
As a reminder, the Ukrainian national team failed to beat Italy in the decisive Euro 2024 qualifying match and qualify for the tournament. At the same time, the game ended in a scandal when the referee did not award a penalty kick to the Azzurri in the last minutes, which even the Italians themselves saw as a mistake.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, all the schedules for the Ukrainian national team in the playoffs of the qualifying tournament for the 2024 European Championship have been published. At the same time, our team will take part in the draw for the final part of the championship.
