The head coach of the German national football team, Julian Nagelsmann, gave a frank interview in which he spoke for the first time about his family and the tragedy that happened 16 years ago. According to the 36-year-old, his father worked for German intelligence and committed suicide.

It all happened when Nagelsmann Jr. was attending a coaching course. For most of his youth, he believed that Erwin Nagelsmann was just serving in the army. As a teenager, Julian found out that his father was an operative of the German Federal Intelligence Service.

"I don't even know exactly what he was doing. I was 15 or 16 years old [when he told me about the job]. He often talked about it during my trips from Landsberg, where we lived, to Munich. He disclosed a very small percentage of information. He was not allowed to talk about his work. For the same reason, he often admitted that it was too much for him. My father did not share his experiences and problems related to his work. In the end, it became an unbearable burden for him," Nagelsmann said in an interview with Der Spiegel, as quoted by The Guardian.

It was very difficult for Julian to accept what happened.

"My father did not leave a suicide note, there was no explanation. But the way he committed suicide made it clear that his decision was very clear to him. It was very shitty for the family, but it helped me to cope to realize that he wanted to die, and it wasn't a cry for help or a signal. I think I have to respect that decision," Nagelsmann added.

Julian recalls that his father was a cheerful man, to begin with.

"He used to joke and always laugh, he loved spending time with friends, playing the guitar, and singing. I think the tragedy was caused by a combination of his workload and his general condition. By the end of his life, he had already changed: the pressure of his career was noticeable," summarized the head coach of the German national team.

Last March, Nagelsmann was fired from Bayern Munich after almost two years at the Allianz Arena. During this time, the Munich team played 84 matches, winning 60 of them. Another 14 matches ended in a draw.

The German national team under Nagelsmann managed to play 4 games: 1 victory and 2 defeats.
