Scandal of the day: karma catches up with the Russians at the World Chess Championship. Video
Famous grandmasters Yan Nepomnyashchy and Daniil Dubov got into a scandal at the World Blitz Championships in Samarkand. The Russian chess players played a game in which they used only knights, and on the 12th move agreed to a draw
At the end of the game, the arbitrator awarded the chess players zero points instead of 0.5. The appeal was rejected.
"I believe that both athletes are responsible for this. They planned this one in advance. I base my opinion on the moves that were made," Slovakian Chief Referee Ivan Švajlen commented on his decision.
Later, in an interview with Russian propagandists, Dubov said that "such moves are almost always a feedback on the actions of the organizers and the work of the judges." According to him, this is the worst World Cup since 2013.
According to the regulations, players must not take any action that may lead to the negation of the game. In case of a violation, the referee has the right to impose a penalty, which has been done.
After 12 rounds, Dubov and Nepomnyashchy have 9 points each. The Russians are in second and fourth place, respectively. Vladislav Artemyev is the leader.
