Kasatonov criticises World Cup broadcasts

Two-time Olympic champion Alexei Kasatonov was outraged by the Russian propaganda television coverage of the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, which is currently taking place in Riga and Tampere. The former USSR national team player noted that games involving "countries that are at war with us" should not be seen by ordinary fans.

Kasatonov said this in a comment to Sport24. He added that the level of the championship is allegedly very low in the absence of a team from the aggressor country, and in addition, it is impossible for Russian hockey experts to learn anything new from watching the championship.

"I think it's wrong to show this tournament on television! Who should we cheer for? For the countries that are at war with us? I don't understand this. Professionals will find a way to watch. Scouts, agents, coaches - they will get the information anyway. It is not necessary to show the tournament on television. What can you learn from it anyway? Is there someone playing at a fantastic level? Norway beating Canada, when did that ever happen? Mediocre players, mediocre teams. I'm sure there's nothing to watch there," Kasatonov said.

Earlier, former Ukrainian national team coach Andriy Nazarov explained the Russians' suspension from the World Cup by saying that "they were just scared of us, afraid that we would become champions". At the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, a fan was forced to take off his T-shirt with the words "Russia" on it. And the propaganda TV channel Match TV interrupted the broadcast of a tournament match because of a huge flag in support of Ukraine.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship saw a huge sensation that fans last saw 23 years ago. In addition, for the first time in history, the Latvian national team reached the semifinals of the World Cup.
