Olympic ice hockey champion Vyacheslav Fetisov has called the conditions for Russian athletes to participate in international competitions arbitrary. The fan of dictator Vladimir Putin complained that Russia failed to force organisations to treat representatives of the aggressor country with respect.
The member of the Toronto Hockey Hall of Fame said this in an interview with the Evening Moscow newspaper. He added that there are allegedly no grounds for suspending Russian athletes from tournaments, and that the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) violate human rights.
"I think this is generally our failure. We failed to make sure that no one touches Russia. We lack the authority to put them all in their place. Including the IOC. There is complete lawlessness - legal and otherwise. There are no grounds for removing athletes from Russia. We had the experience of the Cold War, when our national team played, the confrontation was very tough, but nevertheless, sports were not disturbed," Fetisov said.
Earlier, he sent a message to the IOC and all international organisations over the conditions of Russians' admission to the competition, saying that "the athletes are not to blame for what is happening". Recall that the IOC recommended that international federations suspend Russian athletes who are affiliated with the Russian army and security forces, as well as team sports. They should also not support the war in Ukraine.
