Russian fencer Anna Smirnova accused Ukrainian Olga Kharlan of violating the rules of the bout at the World Championships-2023. The representative of the aggressor country made a demarche after our 2008 Olympic gold medalist refused to shake her hand and filed a protest against the match result.
The corresponding photo was published by the website of the propaganda TV channel Match TV. The letter signed by Smirnova says that Harlan should be punished for her behavior. The athlete from Russia used many exclamation marks in her appeals, showing her indignation.
"The competitor's refusal to salute the opponent, referee and spectators before the start of the fight or after the last blow is penalized with a black card. After the fight Olga Harlan refused to shake hands with Anna Smirnova and must be penalized! Harlan refused to shake hands! This should not have happened and is a violation of the rules!" - wrote the saber fencer.
Smirnova's protest was rejected and Harlan was declared the winner. However, the leadership of the International Fencing Federation (FIE), which was headed by Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov before the war in Ukraine, later disqualified Olga.
