World Rapid Chess Champion (Astana, 2012) and World Blitz Champion (Doha, 2016) Sergey Karjakin, who changed his citizenship from Ukrainian to Russian in 2009, has refused to play at the World Cup under a neutral flag. The tournament is due to take place in the Azerbaijani capital from July 29 to August 26

"The fact is that I will not be able to represent my country at the upcoming tournament, I will not be able to play under my own flag and, if I am successful, I will not hear the Russian anthem. I am categorically against this, my position does not change, I have expressed it many times," Karjakin wrote on his Telegram channel.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Karjakin has been supporting the "SVO" and demonstrating the z-symbol in every possible way, for which he received a six-month suspension from FIDE.

On June 2 last year, Karjakin received the state award of the aggressor country. This event was called a real disgrace on the Internet and questioned the official reason for the authorities' decision.

Last year, Sergey travelled to Donetsk to deliver aid to the 117th rifle regiment of the 'people's police' of the 'Donetsk People's Republic'.
