Legendary Real Madrid defender Marcelo, who plays for Brazilian Fluminense since 2023, broke the leg of Argentinos Juniors player Luciano Sanchez. The incident happened in the 1/8 finals match of the Libertadores Cup.
The 35-year-old Brazilian, a Confederations Cup winner and two-time Olympic medalist, stepped on his opponent's foot in the 56th minute.
Marcelo couldn't contain his emotions and cried after he saw what he had done.
The referee showed the ex-Real Madrid player a red card right away and a few hours later he apologized to the victim via Instagram.
"Had to go through a very difficult moment on the pitch today. Accidentally injured a fellow professional. Luciano, I wish you a speedy recovery and all the strength in the world," Marcelo wrote.
Social media called the moment "one of the most gruesome injuries in soccer."
