"it will not be immediately": Russia's doomed reaction to UEFA's statement on Russia's return to tournaments
Vyacheslav Koloskov, Honorary President of the Russian Football Union (RFU), called the statement by the head of European football (UEFA), Alexander Cheferin, that Russian representatives will be returned to international tournaments only after the war in Ukraine ends, logical. The official added that he had never doubted such plans of UEFA.
Koloskov said this in a comment to the Metaratings.ru portal. The former president of the Russian Football Federation noted that Russian teams were excluded from the competition due to the inability to ensure the safety of representatives of the aggressor country in Europe and foreigners in Russia.
"I have been saying for a year and a half that we will be allowed to play in the international arena when the special military operation in Ukraine (as the war in Ukraine is shamefully called in Russia - ed.) The reason FIFA and UEFA imposed sanctions on us was the special military operation. The inability to ensure the safety of our teams there and foreign teams in Russia. There is nothing new for me here. It is logical and correct. We will be returned when the special military operation is over, and I think it will not be immediately. It will still take some time to adapt. But the key issue is the completion of the special military operation. All this confirms the correctness of the RFU's choice to stay in Europe," Koloskov said.
As a reminder, Russian clubs have been suspended from the Champions League, UEFA League, and Conference League, and the national team from the qualifying tournament for the 2024 European Championship and the League of Nations.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, UEFA has returned Russian representatives to its competitions by appointing a team of referees from Russia to the Women's Nations League game.
