For the first time in history, the Latvian national ice hockey team has reached the semi-finals of the World Championship, which is currently taking place in Latvia and Finland. The hosts beat Sweden 3-1 in the quarter-finals at the Riga Ice Arena.
It was the first time in history that Latvian hockey players reached this stage of the World Cup. Prior to that, the Latvian team had participated in the quarter-finals of the World Ice Hockey Championship five times, and lost all five times.
