For the first time in history, the Latvian national ice hockey team has reached the semi-finals of the World Championship, which is currently taking place in Latvia and Finland. The hosts beat Sweden 3-1 in the quarter-finals at the Riga Ice Arena.
It was the first time in history that Latvian hockey players reached this stage of the World Cup. Prior to that, the Latvian team had participated in the quarter-finals of the World Ice Hockey Championship five times, and lost all five times.
Latvia will compete for the final against Canada, which defeated Finland 4-1. The second pair of semi-finalists will be the USA - Germany.
It should be noted that a week ago, Russia's main propaganda TV channel, Match TV, stopped showing Latvia's matches at the World Ice Hockey Championship, excluding both live broadcasts and replays.
The reason for this was the behaviour of Latvian fans who stretched a banner with a Ukrainian flag and the words "Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!"
