Here is how Georgian police dealt with two-time world wrestling champion Zurab Datunashvili, who joined the protests. Video
Two-time world champion in freestyle wrestling Zurab Datunashvili, who openly supports and participates in anti-government protests in Georgia, was detained in Tbilisi. The 32-year-old three-time European champion and bronze medalist of the 2020 Summer Olympics was forced into a patrol car near the Courtyard Marriott hotel.
At the 2012 Olympic qualifying tournament in Sofia, Zurab Datunashvili used an unusual technique as he was losing his match against Hungarian Peter Bak with a score of 0-3. He suddenly jumped headfirst over his opponent's head, grabbing his waist in flight from the back and brought the Hungarian down. This move helped him gather tens of thousands of views online. As a result, the Georgian athlete won the fight, took first place in the tournament and clenched a right to participate in London Olympics.
Zurab Datunashvili quit the Georgian national team in 2019 after being assaulted by president of the Georgian Wrestling Federation, Gega Gegeshidze. Gegeshidze was charged with violence, and Datunashvili demanded his resignation, claiming that the federation had become a nest of corruption and nepotism.
Datunashvili had to announce the forced end of his career, after which he accepted the offer of the Wrestling Federation of Serbia and, after being granted Serbian citizenship, became one of the leaders of the national team, winning an Olympic award and gold at the World and European Championships.
As reported, Georgian residents continue to oppose the decision of the ruling Georgian Dream party to suspend the country's European integration by the end of 2028. The Constitutional Court also refused to recognize the results of the parliamentary elections as unconstitutional.
President Salome Zurabishvili announced that she would not resign, calling the parliament "illegitimate" and not entitled to elect a president.
