He was thrown out of the airport. Famous Olympic winner from Russia was not allowed to enter Romania for the European Championships
Two-time Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling Abdulrashid Sadulayev was not allowed to enter Romania for the European Championships. According to RIA Novosti, the titled athlete was turned away at the Bucharest airport, despite the fact that he allegedly had a visa obtained in Spain. Border guards doubted the authenticity of the document and threw the five-time world champion out of the country.
The head of the Russian Wrestling Federation (RWF), Mikhail Mamiashvili, could not answer unequivocally why Sadulayev had to return to Moscow.
"It's still difficult to name the reason. We will meet with the athlete in the near future and discuss everything. The fact is that he received a visa in Spain and flew to Bucharest from Barcelona. In Spain, he left the airport, returned, safely boarded the plane and arrived in Romania," Mamiashvili said.
The RWF President admitted that there is no chance that the issue will be resolved and the 27-year-old Dagestani will play at the European Championships.
"We won't be able to find a replacement either - all the draws have almost passed. It is clear that he is upset. I advised him to stay calm and prepare for the next tournaments," Mamiashvili added.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Ukrainian Greco-Roman wrestler Oleksandr Grushin refused to take a joint photo with Russian Anvar Allakhyarov at the award ceremony at the European Championships in Romania.
