First or record title: who could win Euro 2024
There are only a few days left until Euro 24, and it's time to refresh your memory about who will compete for what at the championship. Reputable resources have compiled a list of five teams that can really claim to lift the European Championship trophy over their heads. OBOZ.UA compares their chances of winning and tells you more about the trophies.
England (4 trophies)
England has the best chances to win this year's Euro. The game of football was born on the islands and the World Cup was brought there back in 1966. For the sake of beauty, let's add three more Rose Cup trophies (they played it briefly, with Scotland and Latin American teams). That's it for international trophies. We can mention the FA Cup, which was played for a hundred years between all members of the united kingdom, where the British won 54 times. However, such a tournament can hardly be called even an intra-European one. So it turns out that England has only 4 victories in world competitions.
It's hard to believe, but the English national team, despite its star status, does not have a single Euro trophy on its shelf! Moreover, England managed to reach the Euro finals only in the last draw! This year, they are not only obvious favorites, but they have gathered so many star players that they can finally win. Here are Opta's odds on the national teams winning the European Championship. Despite the zero in the cups column, the Lions are considered the main favorites.
The full application is known and there is a huge number of star players: Sterling, Henderson, Phillips, Maddison, Grealish, Maguire, Chilwell, James, Pope, Colville, Sancho. A whole team of powerful performers. At the same time, Bellingham, Walker, Alexander-Arnold, Jones, Foden, Kane, Palmer, Saka have been called up. The coaching staff has access to very strong players, winners of numerous domestic championships and European tournaments. Southgate definitely has a great chance to finally bring the European Cup to Foggy Albion.
France (8 trophies)
The second main favorite of this Euro is the phenomenal France. Twice winners of the Euro (1998, 2018), twice winners of the Mundial (1984, 2018), they are second in the list of contenders for victory. Although the French national team won its first trophy only in the 80s! The fantastically talented Platini generation of that time lit the star of the Tricolors, who began to win cup after cup. Among the international tournaments, they also won the Confederations Cup twice, and two golds: the Olympics and the Artemio Franca Cup.
A triumph at the European Championships will allow us to take the top spot. Of course, the French are inferior to Argentina, Brazil, or even Mexico at the global level, but on our continent, only the Germans are in competition. Mbappe will receive the status of national team captain for the first time, which is an additional lever in favor of the tricolors. Kante is returning, Barcola and Zaïre-Emery will make their Euro debuts, Fofana, Pavard, Giroud will be there. Well, the squad is solid.
Portugal (2 trophies)
Portugal's strength seems to be clear: head coach Roberto Martinez has long ago selected 26 players with whom the national team will make a new attempt to win the trophy. Costa will be in goal, Silva, Dalot, Cancelo, Dias will be in defense. The middle line is the prime Fernandes, Palhinha, Silva. Jota, Conceicao, Leao will be up front. And also Ronaldo, who never gets tired, even though he hasn't played in Europe for a long time. He broke through the ceiling with 138 goals and 206 games for the national team, two absolute records. Cristiano became a thought leader who, due to the same injury, never won the final on his own. This year may be his last attempt to finish his international career on horseback.
Portugal is also on the list of contenders to win the Euros, but they have only 2 trophies, both localized in Europe. First, they won Euro 2016, and then they won the first ever Nations League in 18/19. There is no success in the international arena. The Iberians have played at the World Cup 8 times, but the bronze medals of '66 are the maximum. Since 2002, they have been constantly trying to do something, but the 4th place in 2006 and the quarterfinals in Qatar are the only achievements on the planet.
Spain (6 trophies)
Spain is one of the most titled national teams in the world and ranks second in terms of trophies in Europe. The last successes in the international arena were three consecutive Cups: the period 2008-2012 is the golden era of the new Furia Roja. In total, the Spaniards have 6 cups, divided into four tournaments: one world champion status, three European victories, Olympic gold, and a victory in the League of Nations. Three victories at the Euros is a record number (along with the Germans) and this time the team can become the sole leader of the ranking, as it seems to have overcome the search crisis.
Their group will be a challenge: they are in a quartet with Italy, Albania, and Croatia. But the Spaniards are called favorites both at this stage and in the playoffs. Of course, de la Fuente has a whole cohort of young players to replace the legendary generation: Yamal, Williams, Pedri, Baena, Torres. Next to them are the experienced Rodri, Simon, Carvajal, Ruiz, Morata, Olmo. The coach's schemes are flexible, and we talked about this during the entire training period. This is what will make it possible to surprise everyone, although Spain is not in the top three in the list of contenders.
Germany (8 trophies)
They were pushed by the tournament hosts. The Germans want to break a shameful streak of poor performances. After the victory in 2014, their luck seemed to turn away from them and only some luck allowed them to overcome the group stage, and not every time. The highest achievements are 4 triumphs at the World Cup and 3 at the Euros. Of course, the Bundestim wants to equalize the numbers. There is also the Confederations Cup in 2017, but this tournament has never been considered serious. It turns out that Germany has been without major victories for 10 years.
The German squad is controversial: Hummels, Adeyemi, Goretzka, and Süle are not present; only Gnabry is known to be absent, as he was broken by illness. But even without them, the Germans have a lot of talent. Anton, Raum, Kimmich Schlotterbeck are on the list. The mastodons Kimmich, Undav, Gundogan and Kroos have been announced. We are expecting Wirtz, Musiala, Sane, and Füllkrug on the field. Pavlović, who shone in Bayern Munich, will be able to make his debut. With such players and such forecasts (as well as expectations from the pressure of the domestic championship), Germany is simply obliged to reach at least the semifinals of Euro 24.
