Famous Israeli football player shot by Hamas terrorists at a festival near Gaza Strip
Famous Israeli footballer Lior Asulin was killed in a Hamas terrorist attack on October 7. The 43-year-old ex-forward and his friends were celebrating his birthday at a music festival in Kibbutz Re'im near the town of Ofakim, 30 kilometers from the Gaza Strip. According to Ynet, Asulin stopped communicating after the attack, and his death was confirmed on October 8.
Asulin played a major role in the early 2000s in the Premier League and was one of the best strikers in the league at the time. He scored a total of 88 goals in 284 matches in Israel's top flight. He started his career at Maccabi Herzliya, then played for Bnei Sakhnin, where he was part of its historic State Cup victory.
Then he played for two years for Beitar Jerusalem (scored 15 goals in the 2004/05 season, the second highest scorer) and Bnei Yehuda (the second highest scorer in the Premier League with 13 goals in the 2006 season). At the peak of his career, he was invited to Marseille for a trial, but ultimately continued to play in the Israeli Premier League.
Assulin also played for Hapoel Tel Aviv, Hapoel Be'er Sheva, and Hapoel Petah Tikva (whom he helped to reach the Premier League). In his last seasons, he played mostly in lower leagues until he retired from football.
Israeli football clubs expressed condolences over the death of the famous athlete.
