Wilfried Florentin, the 2019 European boxing champion in the 91 kg weight category from France, was shot dead in Val-de-Marne (a department in the north-central part of the country), lequipe.fr reports. The 23-year-old athlete worked as a security guard in a hookah bar. Other details of the tragedy are still unknown.

"I am stunned. I am very sorry. Such a loss. He was the father of two children. He showed great promise. This is a real tragedy. He was working as a bouncer and got two bullets in the chest," said Johan Saui, the boxer's promoter.

According to local media, Florentin was fatally wounded during the fight. When the police arrived, the man had already been taken to hospital by his friends. According to unofficial information, the reason for the murder could have been a quarrel between the security guards of the establishment, probably over a woman. French police opened a case under the article on attempted premeditated murder.

In September 2019, Florentin won a gold medal in the 91 kg weight category at the European Youth Championships in Sofia (Bulgaria). In June 2021 in Villebon (Essonne), he failed to qualify for the Olympic qualifying tournament in Tokyo.

The following year, during a boxing competition in Paris, where he was present as a spectator, he punched a coach and was disqualified. Florentine turned professional, and between September 2022 and April 2023, he fought three fights abroad (in Denmark, Luxembourg and Monaco), winning all three.
