"End of career?" Russian rival Maguchikh fails at the "alternative to the Olympics"
While Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Maguchikh won gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, her main Russian rival Maria Lasitskene (née Kuchina) failed at the New Height tournament in Moscow. The 31-year-old Tokyo 2020 champion took third place with a score of 1.88 meters, behind Maria Kochanova and Daria Slepova.
"I didn't want to bury myself in the responsibility of having to win today, to put myself through unnecessary brainwashing. I came to jump at the start, which is called Nova Vysota, and that's all. I came as an athlete, trying to show a good result," Lasitskene commented on Match TV.
In comments, Russian fans sharply criticized Maria's performance, calling it the end of her career.
Earlier, OBOZ.UA reported that Russian fans could not stand Maguchikh's success at the 2024 Olympic Games. Fans from the Russian Federation threw a real "hysteria" under the article by sports.ru about the Ukrainian's triumph.
On August 4, Maguchikh won a gold medal in the high jump at the 2024 Olympic Games. The Ukrainian athlete took first place with a result of 2.00 meters.
Another Ukrainian, Iryna Gerashchenko, was third (195 cm), winning bronze together with Eleanor Patterson (Australia). Mykhailo Kokhan also took third place in the hammer throw tournament.
