"Catch the drug addict". The President of the Russian Football Federation told what needs to happen for Russia to return and became a laughingstock
The President of the Russian Football Union (RFU), Alexander Dyukov, has said that Russia may be returned to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He reminded that Russia's suspension from the competition was motivated by two main arguments: the danger of holding matches in the country and a possible boycott by other national associations and clubs, which could jeopardize the integrity of the tournaments.
Dyukov noted that after the decision to ban Russia appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). However, in order for the situation to change, all restrictions on the part of FIFA and UEFA must be lifted. He expressed hope that this could happen next year.
Dyukov also admitted the possibility of including the Russian national team in one of the unfilled World Cup qualifying groups if the ban is lifted. However, he emphasized that this discussion will only become relevant after the sanctions are officially lifted.
After these words, Dyukov received a lot of negative comments from his compatriots.
"The daily threats to all countries from Russia's main sports channel, Match TV, especially give hope for a return," "We'll nuke and all sanctions will be lifted," and "Catch the drug addict," users wrote.
In addition, the Russians say that there will be no recovery in Russian world sports until the withdrawal of troops from Ukraine.
Russian fans also remind Dyukov that the baskets for the 2024 World Cup draw have already been formed. On November 28, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) announced the roster of participants in the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The Russian national team is not among them.
