Unique lung transplant from a posthumous donor lasted 16 hours: a unique lung transplant from a posthumous donor was performed in Lviv

Ukrainian surgeons have performed a unique lung transplant from a posthumous donor. The organ was transplanted to 56-year-old Oleksiy Chernyshkov from Kyiv.

This was reported by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The man, who took part in the liquidation of the Chernobyl accident, suffered from a serious illness - total bullous emphysema. Because of it, he could barely walk 30 metres on his own.

Oleksiy received a lung transplant from a 54-year-old man who had died of a stroke. The operation lasted 16 hours - it was the second such transplant in Ukraine and the first such intervention that our doctors performed on their own. Previously, they were assisted by foreign colleagues.

This historic operation was performed by the team of the First Medical Association of Lviv, led by cardiac surgeons Roman Domashych and Ihor Humennyi.

Oleksiy Chernyshkov is raising his 11-year-old son alone and decided to undergo the operation so that the child could have a father. The man is now breathing on his own and is feeling well after the surgery.

The Ministry of Health added that the deceased Ukrainian, whose relatives agreed to donate organs to other patients, saved the lives of five people after his death. In addition to his lungs, doctors transplanted his heart, liver and kidneys, and all operations were successful.

"A blessed memory to the donor. We are extremely grateful to the family for their decision!" - the ministry wrote.
