Russian Federation Denied Ukraine Access to Information on Radiation Levels at ZNPP

The aggressor country Russia stopped the automatic transmission to Ukraine of data from radiation monitoring sensors at the seized Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Energodar. Such an instruction was allegedly given directly from the Kremlin.

Oleg Korikov, acting head of Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine, told this at a briefing on Wednesday, June 14. According to him, the IAEA representatives, who are at the ZNPP, now have to manually record this data.

They photograph the information from the sensors, record it and transmit it to the IAEA head office, which is located in Vienna.

Later, these indicators are entered into a corresponding system, to which all IAEA states, including Ukraine, have access.

Korikov emphasized that the relevant command was received from Moscow two weeks ago. Thus, the radiation monitoring equipment located at the Zaporizhzhia NPP industrial site is no longer accessible.

He noted that such actions are absolutely unacceptable and the aggressor country violates the requirements of nuclear and radiation safety. The Russian occupation troops continue to destroy the principles of safety at the largest nuclear power plant in Europe with such actions.

It is noteworthy that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi postponed an earlier planned visit to the Zaporizhzhya NPP "for safety reasons". The visit was scheduled for 14 June. It is known that he intends to check the water level in the cooling pond there.

The day before, Grossi arrived in Ukraine and held talks with President Vladimir Zelensky. They discussed Russia's undermining of the Kakhovka HPP dam, after which the safety risks of the Zaporizhzhya NPP increased significantly.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine issued an order to Enerhoatom to put Zaporizhzhya NPP Unit 5 into "cold shutdown". The operation restriction will be in effect until the elimination of the detected violations.
