A monument to Russian Tsar Peter the Great was dismantled in Poltava. The monument was removed from public space in accordance with current legislation and the decolonization policy of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.

According to the Secretary of the Poltava City Council, Kateryna Yamshchykova, the monument was dismantled in compliance with all necessary procedures. This was reported by Suspilne Poltava.

The representative of the Poltava City Hall explained that the dismantling of the monument is not an act of vandalism, but a conscious and responsible action of the community, which is getting rid of Russian imperial markers. The decision to move the imperial monuments was made during a meeting of the executive committee of the Poltava City Council on February 20.

The first monument to Russian Tsar Peter the Great was erected in Poltava in 1817, a brick monument. In 1849, it was replaced by a new one made of cast iron.

It is worth noting that the expert council of the Ministry of Culture recommended dismantling and removing three monuments in Poltava from public space in 2022. In addition to the monument to Peter the Great, these are the Monument of Glory in Korpusnyi Park and the monument dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava, a monument to the fortress commandant Oleksii Kelin and the defenders of Poltava. It was erected in 1909 on the site of the fourth bastion of the fortress. Until 1918, the building was crowned with a figure of a double-headed eagle.

As a reminder, a monument to Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov was dismantled in Kyiv's Pechersk district as part of de-Russification. It was located near the Oleksandrivska Hospital.
