The first presidential election in Ukraine took place on December 1, 1991. Among the 6 candidates, Leonid Kravchuk garnered almost 62% of the vote, and Viacheslav Chornovil came in second with 23%.

It is worth noting that 32 years later, many Ukrainians would like to change their choice. This is evidenced by the results of a poll conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.

Many respondents believe that the results of the 1991 presidential election had a significant impact on the further development of independent Ukraine. In December 2023, sociologists asked Ukrainian citizens which of the two main candidates they would vote for now if they were in 1991.

Ukrainians were asked to choose between Kravchuk and Chornovil. Among the current citizens of our country, 74% would vote for Chornovil. At the same time, only 13% of respondents would vote for Kravchuk.

In terms of those who would vote and have made up their minds, 86% of votes would be cast for Chornovil, and 14% for Kravchuk. The sociologists also clarified that among respondents who were actually eligible to vote in 1991 (nowadays, these are people aged 50 and older), 81% would vote for Chornovil and only 10% for Kravchuk.

It is worth noting that more votes for Chornovil would have been cast in the western and central regions. He would have received slightly less support in eastern and southern Ukraine.

As a reminder, on May 17, 2022, a farewell ceremony for the first president of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk, took place in Kyiv. The president was laid to rest at the Ukrainian House on European Square.

Earlier, Taras Chornovil, the son of politician Viacheslav Chornovil, who was killed in 1999, believes that his father could have been killed with brass knuckles, as stated by former Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Mykola Holomsha. This version has been voiced before, but the investigation team has not commented on it, Taras says.
