Fedor Shandor may become Ukraine's ambassador to Hungary

Fedir Shandor, a professor at Uzhhorod National University known as a teacher from the trenches, may become Ukraine's ambassador to Hungary. After the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, he went to the front, but in between combat duties, he lectured students.

Hungarian journalist Szabolcs Panyi was the first to report on his Twitter that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky was considering such a possibility. However, he noted that the final decision had not yet been made.

The hvg.hu publication, citing its own sources, also reported that Fedir Shandor's name was mentioned as a possible ambassador to Hungary. The journalists' interlocutors in diplomatic circles said that this issue had allegedly been discussed with Ukrainian colleagues.

According to the newspaper, the head of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Maria Mezentseva, said earlier that Ukraine wanted to send a person with Hungarian roots and a degree in social sciences as a diplomatic representative to Hungary.

However, the MP did not name a specific name.

According to journalists, the first thing they are looking for is not a diplomat, but a person who has good language and cultural relations with the country, has good professional experience and can conduct serious negotiations. The decision will supposedly be made shortly.

It should be noted that Ukraine does not have an ambassador to Hungary. In 2022, Liudmyla Nepop was dismissed from this position.

Recall after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Fedir Shandor became a volunteer and a junior sergeant in the 101st Independent Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces. In the spring, a photo of Shandor giving a lecture to students right from a trench went viral. He did not give up teaching and agreed with the command on a schedule that allows him to combine service and classes at two faculties.

Fedir Shandor has been working as a lecturer at the Department of Social Work at the Uzhhorod National University and as the director of the Carpathian Center for Poling Studies since 1998. In addition, he is the director of the NGO "My City - Uzhhorod", the author of local history literature in 10 languages of different nationalities, the organizer of many educational events and competitions, and an honored worker of tourism.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, people's deputies of the Verkhovna Rada agreed to appoint a 50-year-old teacher, educational organizer, and soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, as Minister of Education and Science. He has been defending his country at the front for almost a year and while remotely continued to serve as director of the National Center "Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine".
