SUVs confidently lead the ratings of high-quality and reliable cars. The models offer comfort, fuel economy, excellent handling and maneuverability.

What Car experts have published a list of SUVs with all-wheel drive that are ideal for off-road driving. BMW X7 and Range Rover are at the top of the ranking, but the list has been updated with unexpected models: The Grenadier is a relative newcomer, while the Wrangler can trace its roots back to the early 1940s.

Jeep Wrangler

The Wrangler in the Rubicon variant is not only the most powerful SUV on sale, but also perhaps the most interesting. With three differential locks and a proper low-range gearbox that you engage with an old-fashioned lever, you feel properly engaged in the off-road driving experience. The Wrangler is smaller, lighter and more compact than the Defender 110, Grenadier and Ranger.

Ford Ranger Raptor

The Raptor was an unexpected star of this test. Given that it was developed in Australia, experts suspected that it would be better on fast dirt roads and wide open spaces of soil and gravel, but they did not even think that the Raptor would be so capable off-road.

Ineos Grenadier

The Grenadier is extremely impressive. It has more off-road capabilities, provides a great tactile experience, and looks absolutely bulletproof. If Ineos can find a way to simplify the differential locking procedure and improve the steering, it will become an even more tempting proposition for off-road enthusiasts.

Dacia Duster

Hill descent control is standard and you can easily switch between front-wheel and all-wheel drive. There is no low-range gearbox, but the very low first gear of the six-speed manual transmission is designed to compensate. All-wheel drive is available on top Duster Extreme models. In practice, overcoming a sandy or muddy slope after a decent run, it is difficult to notice the difference between the variable system of the Ignis and the locking system of the Duster.

Suzuki Ignis 1.2 Hybrid SZ5 Allgrip

The Ignis can be purchased with an optional all-wheel drive system, as well as a smart off-road traction control system called Grip Control. According to the manufacturer, the Suzuki Ignis is "rugged and versatile enough to take on the outdoors." That's a bold claim, considering that its 180 mm ground clearance is quite limited and the tires are designed more for efficiency than off-road traction.

Nissan Ariya Evolve

This version has all-wheel drive and more ground clearance than its competitors. However, the tests were not very successful: The Ariya only managed 35% of the hill. Stopping halfway up the hill, the car simply refused to move, experts say. Its eco-oriented Dunlop Sport Maxx 050 tires didn't show any off-road advantage. And when the testers tried to bring the Ariya down a hill in a controlled manner, its overly intrusive stability control system made it extremely difficult; the brakes grabbed in an unpredictable way, pushing the car off the line. After the Ariya almost got stuck sideways on the hill, the experts decided not to put the car through even more stressful tests.

Subaru Solterra Limited

With X-Mode engaged, the Subaru Solterra climbed 35% of the hill as if it wasn't even there, with the traction control system gently pulling the best grip each tire could have thanks to its subtle electric torque control. Subaru has stayed true to its tradition by giving its first electric SUV proper off-road capabilities. Unlike its Toyota bZ4X twin, the Solterra only comes with all-wheel drive with an X mode setting for extra traction on difficult terrain.

Land Rover Defender 110 P400e X-Dynamic HSE

Experts tested the most advanced Defender on sale: the plug-in hybrid P400e. Air suspension, center differential lock, hill descent control, and a low-range gearbox are standard, but you'll have to pay extra for off-road cruise control and rear differential lock.

BMW X7 xDrive40i M Sport

The X7 doesn't have any fancy driving modes, differential lock, low-range gearbox, or off-road tires. However, the car is equipped with a height-adjustable air suspension and descent control. The X7 is available with 3-liter diesel and gasoline engines.

Range Rover D350

This version is equipped with a height-adjustable air suspension, four-wheel steering, and locking center and rear differentials. A large number of wide-angle cameras also facilitate off-road driving and parking.
