Will withstand any challenges: the best SUVs you can buy right now
When choosing an SUV, you should pay attention to off-road capability, including ground clearance, entry and exit angles, and all-wheel drive. You also need an engine powerful enough to overcome difficult road conditions.
Even when riding off-road, it's important to feel comfortable and safe, so modern safety systems are a must for this segment. TopGear experts have ranked the best SUVs on the market right now.
Land Rover Defender 110
The manufacturer has focused on a more practical version with a long wheelbase of 110 for passengers, but you can also have a three-door short wheelbase of 90. There is also a 110 plug-in hybrid.
The chassis is an all-new aluminum monocoque rather than the old body-on-frame structure. The Defender 110 also has air suspension as standard, which increases off-road ground clearance. Land Rover has a 5-liter supercharged V8 in both the 90 and 110.
Toyota Land Cruiser
This is still a "traditional" 4x4 that uses a frame chassis. It runs on diesel fuel, still has locking differentials and a low-range gearing. But, like the Mercedes G-Class, it uses a double wishbone front suspension, like the Ford Bronco, and the anti-roll bar can be disconnected to improve the axle articulation.
Next year, Toyota will add 48V mild hybrid features, and in some markets, the 250 version will be available with a 2.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine combined with a full hybrid system. The European market will get Hilux's upgraded 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel engine, which offers 201 hp. It is paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission that is much more responsive and docile than the previous six-speed transmission. There is also a central touchscreen (8.0 or 12.3 inches depending on the specification level), as well as voice assistant and driver assistance systems.
Mercedes Benz G-Class
Other luxury SUVs may go off-road, but the G remains committed to both aesthetics and capability. It's a five-seat luxury SUV that still has a full set of differential locks (front, middle and center).
There's a new six-cylinder G500 (which replaces the lazier V8), a G63 with new suspension and truly amazing dynamics, a G450d diesel and 48-volt hybrid systems. The new G580 features EQ technology, the all-electric G-Wagen.
The car has been updated throughout the range, with a new MBUX touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard. The G-Wagen may never become a model of efficiency, but it is a reliable choice.
Ford Ranger
This is the second generation of the Ford Ranger, and it is the most popular pickup truck in the UK and Europe. It's worth noting that the new Ford Ranger and VW Amarok are essentially the same thanks to the collaboration between the two brands. At the front, the Ford Ranger has a new grille and LED "C-clamp" headlights (for the first time), while wider wheel arches have improved stability.
Inside, the cabin is dominated by a new 10.1 or 12-inch central vertical touchscreen, which features Ford's latest SYNC 4 infotainment system. The Ranger is available with two 2-liter turbo diesel engines with 168 or 202 hp, as well as a new 3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 diesel engine that produces 237 hp. Meanwhile, the initial 2-liter turbo diesel got a six-speed manual transmission, and the variant with increased power and V6 - a 10-speed automatic one.
