Why Tbilisi is called the "capital of dogs": what to see in the city

Yulia PoteriankoNews

Cat lovers call Istanbul, Turkey, the most important city in the world, where furry animals feel like full-fledged owners. Do you know where the dog capital of the world is located?

According to the Express, the main city of Georgia, Tbilisi, has earned this status. Located in the picturesque valley of the Mtkvari River, often called the Kura River, it boasts a rich and complex history that dates back more than 1500 years. It also boasts the peaceful coexistence of people and many dogs.

Tbilisi attracts tourists for a variety of reasons. While some want to stroll through the charming cobblestone streets of the Old Town, others stop to admire the architecture of the modern glass Bridge of Peace or the ancient Narikala Fortress.

But landscape, culture, and history are not all this place has to offer. Tbilisi has also become a popular destination for animal lovers, who affectionately call it the dog capital of the world. Street dogs have become part of the urban environment here. Traditionally, many city residents tolerate these animals, feed and care for them

Dogs feel great in the mild climate of Tbilisi – they can often be seen in crowded places, where they peacefully rest in the warm sun. The city residents do not object to this. They are happy to communicate with the dogs. While some feed the dogs that live in the same neighborhood with them, others help dog shelters.

The life of dogs in Tbilisi was shown by the blogger giuliaaandronico, who visited the city and was amazed by the attitude of its residents towards these animals. "I've never seen so many dogs on the street, but at the same time, the locals took such good care of them. Some restaurants, businesses, and hotels offer them food and small dog kennels outside their establishments!" she said.

Unlike some countries that resort to euthanizing stray dogs, the Georgian authorities take a more humane approach. Thus, Tbilisi adheres to a policy of preserving the lives of stray animals. The problem of stray dogs is solved by sterilizing and vaccinating them. This prevents them from reproducing uncontrollably. To ensure the safety of both the dogs and people, the animals wear colored tags on their ears and have a chip that indicates that the dog has been vaccinated and sterilized.

Nevertheless, tourists who are going to visit Tbilisi are advised to be careful with street dogs. Ask in advance where in the city you can get a rabies vaccination if a dog bites a traveler.

Guests of the city who are not afraid of dogs are also offered to admire its main attractions. They include:

  • Old Tbilisi – explore the charming narrow streets, colorful facades, wooden balconies, and eclectic architecture. Highlights include the Abanotubani sulfur baths district, a must-see for its famous baths and healing hot springs.
  • Narikala Fortress is a historical ruin overlooking the city. You can climb it on foot or take the cable car to admire the panoramic view of Tbilisi.
  • Holy Trinity Cathedral – This massive modern Orthodox cathedral is one of the tallest religious buildings in the world and a landmark in Tbilisi.
  • The Bridge of Peace is an impressive modern glass and steel pedestrian bridge spanning the Mtkvari River.
  • Chronicles of Georgia is a massive monument near the city center that tells the story of the country's history and religion. This monument offers great views.
  • Turtle Lake (Korki Lake) is a peaceful place for those who want to go hiking, relax, or enjoy a quiet meal. It is a great place for picnics.
