Why no one will ever see a fully shot 'Batgirl': new details on the scandal of one of the most expensive canceled movies ever made

One of the most expensive canceled movies in history, Batgirl, about the DC Comics superhero of the same name, will most likely never be released. This happened not only due to a "change in strategy," as Warner Bros. stated, but also due to a series of setbacks, plot holes, and lack of funding.

The new details of the scandal were revealed on YouTube by the well-known film blogger Critical Drinker, who spoke to the creators of Batgirl. The movie, which was already completely filmed and cost about $100 million, was "written off" and deleted from the company's servers overnight, so only a limited number of people have access to it.

The plot revolved around the story of Barbara Gordon, who is looking for the person responsible for her mother's death. She died in a fire organized by one of the villains of the cinematic universe, who worked for the mafia and was getting rid of unnecessary real estate in Gotham.

The original plan was to release The Flash, which would explain the concept of alternate universes to the audience, and to continue the theme with Batgirl. American singer and actress Leslie Grace was chosen for the role, having been selected from among 500 applicants.

However, the announcement of the main character caused a controversial reaction and the first wave of criticism of the film company. According to the blogger, the filming went well and smoothly, and the actors got used to the role perfectly.

That was the end of the positive news. It is reported that during the filming process, the producers and crew were amazed at how many plot holes and unclear motives the script contained.

The filmmakers seemed to expect that the studio would still have to order edits and reshoots because the inconsistencies in the plot were too obvious, but amidst the wider problems in filming and the postponement of the Flash premiere, they decided to shift their focus away from Batgirl.

When the studio got to post-production and all the scenes were shot, the film started to run out of budget, which meant problems with special effects, which are very important in superhero films.

During this period, the studio also began to demand that the film be lighter and funnier, even though Batgirl was originally intended to be a somewhat noirish, dark and realistic work.

The filmmakers decided to show the audience a version without effects that had not been fully edited. The media wrote that it received only 30% of favorable reviews, but the studio denied these rumors. According to their data, 61% of viewers liked the movie, which is a mediocre result, so in theory, the film could have been successful.

It was during this period that the newly minted CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery decided to relaunch the DC comic book universe and ruthlessly wrote off several projects.

In this new reality, it was decided not to shoot and invest in Batgirl, and the film was simply forgotten. In 2022, the audience still hoped that the movie would be shown on the HBO Max streaming platform, but later these hopes were dashed by the cruel reality.

To summarize, the studio does not hold anyone responsible for the premiere's cancellation. It so happened that Batgirl started filming when Warner Bros. was moving according to a stable plan, but unexpected problems forced the studio to reconsider and cover old projects for the success of new ones.

The film was characterized as a net loss and shelved to write off taxes and save on royalty payments. It would be too expensive for the studio to release it.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA wrote that a scandal erupted around the new TV series "Make it to 30", which is broadcast on TET TV channel. Residents of the city of Kolomyia, Ivano-Frankivsk region, were outraged by the "distorted" portrayal of the heroine from their city.
