It seems to us now that tights are not clothes, but a consumable in the wardrobe. They were in terrible short supply in the USSR. And because of the shortage, Soviet people were forced to come up with life hacks using common things that now seem wild.

So, if a woman managed to get nylon or nylon tights, she tried to store them in the freezer. OBOZ.UA explains why this very strange habit appeared.

In fact, the explanation for this life hack is quite simple: women wanted to extend the life of a scarce item of clothing. This advice was even published in women's magazines of the time. It was explained by the fact that the frosty air supposedly made synthetic fibers stronger and tights would not tear longer.

It is especially sad that this life hack only became popular in the 1980s. It was then that both tights and refrigerators became relatively affordable for people. Previously, both were considered real luxuries. The prices for these goods were appropriate and they were available to a few.

By the way, the life hack had an improved version. It was believed that tights pre-wet before freezing would be even better protected from holes and puffs.

However, further tests showed that this life hack, which Soviet women relied on so much, made no sense. Freezing did not protect tights, but only gave their owners a false sense of security.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA told you why children in the USSR were breaking chewing gum - the reason is also quite sad. We also mentioned what products were a dream item for Soviet people. Nowadays, they can be easily bought in any small grocery store, but in the Soviet Union, these simple products were impossible to find. By the way, one popular product in the USSR was replaced with a not very safe for health surrogate, and you can read why this happened.
