"Whoever violates this will die". A unique royal seal from the time of the Hittite Empire has been found
In Turkey during excavations was found a cuneiform seal, which was used by the royal family in the times of the Hittite Empire. The inscription on the seal "Whoever breaks this will die" attracted special attention of archeologists to the find.
The unique find was excavated in the province of Kirikkale, about 100 kilometers from the capital of Turkey, Ankara in the city of Büklükale. From the second half of the 2nd millennium BC, there was an important Hittite urban center on these lands, writes Arkeonews.
A team of scholars led by Dr. Kimiyoshi Matsumura, Associate Professor of Archaeology at Kirsehir Ahi Evran University, found a royal seal from the time of the Hittite Empire during excavations conducted in the ruins of Byuklukale for 14 years. Since this place was a key transportation crossroads from ancient times and Byuklukale controlled it, many deals were made here.
Forensics has confirmed that the seal found has the phrase "Whoever breaks this will die." This inscription indicates that violators of agreements would be punished. Although Hittite laws usually provided for fines or compensation instead of death or corporal punishment as a sanction for an offense.
"These seals were usually placed on contracts stating that if anything was done contrary to the agreement, it would be punished. The king and queen from Hattus sent something here. This shows that there was an intense relationship between Hattusa and the royal family in this city," Matsumura emphasized.
The archaeologist also said that tablets have recently been found at Byuklukal indicating that religious ceremonies were held there. "It is known that these ceremonies were performed by the Hittite royal family, king or queen. A Hittite ruler is believed to have arrived here or resided here. All this indicates that Byuklukale was an important city in the Hittite Empire," Kimiyoshi Matsumura added.
Also found during the excavations was another terracotta print with motifs in several fragments. What exactly it means will become clear after scientific examination.
