English scientists have studied the cognitive functions of "larks", people who are early risers, and owls, who often stay up late. The results of the analysis showed that late risers have better memory and are more active during the day.

A large number of well-known cultural figures belong to the "owl" chronotype, which confirms a high level of intellectual abilities, The Guardian writes. The functioning of their central nervous system is better.

The study involved more than 26,000 people who took a series of intelligence, reaction, and memory tests. Scientists collected information about the duration of sleep of the participants and the time when they feel most alert and productive. It turned out that people who go to bed late have better cognitive function test results than early risers.

"We found that sleep duration has a direct impact on brain function, and we believe that proactively managing sleep patterns is really important to improve and protect our brain function," explained one of the researchers, Daqing Ma.

The scientists emphasized that everyone should listen to the needs of their own body and sleep enough hours a day. Only then will it be possible to maintain the healthy functioning of the central nervous system, "Without a detailed picture of what is happening in the brain, we do not know whether the chronotype of a 'morning' or 'evening' person affects memory and thinking, or whether cognitive decline is caused by changes in sleep patterns."
