Which Japanese cars boasted the highest sales in the US in 2023
In 2023, car sales began to recover after the 2022 crisis. The full-scale war in Ukraine disrupted many supply chains, and markets around the world began to suffer significantly. However, last year, the American market returned to growth.
Car And Driver magazine has compiled a list of models that had the highest sales in the United States. Here are the top ten Japanese bestsellers that made the list.
Toyota RAV4
Units sold: 434 943
Even in the crisis year of 2022, the model was at its peak. And now it has managed to demonstrate even greater popularity.
Honda CR-V
Units sold: 361 457
The eternal competitor of the RAV4 slipped in sales in 2022 and still hasn't been able to recover to pre-war levels, although it has significantly improved its position.
Toyota Camry
Units sold: 290 649
The Camry remains one of the most popular passenger cars in the United States. Even a slight dip in sales in 2023 did not knock it off from its strong market position.
Nissan Rogue
Units sold: 271 458
Compared to 2022, sales of this SUV increased by almost half. However, this figure also includes the compact Rogue Sport model, which will soon be discontinued.
Toyota Tacoma
Units sold: 234 768
This year, the Japanese pickup truck received a significant update, and it has already earned favorable reviews from journalists. That is why Tacoma did not show sales growth. However, it still remains in the top.
Toyota Corolla
Units sold: 232 370
Not many compact cars are on the list of American bestsellers, but Corolla is still among them. Although sales growth in 2023 was quite small - only 5%.
Honda Civic
Units sold: 200 381
The increase in inventory helped Honda to significantly increase sales of sedans and hatchbacks in the United States. Thus, the Civic was bought as much as 50% more often than in 2022.
Honda Accord
Units sold: 197 947
The successful redesign of the model in 2023 helped to significantly increase its sales, but it did not overtake its direct competitor, the Toyota Camry, which is set to be updated in 2025.
Toyota Highlander
Units sold: 169 543
Despite a significant drop in price, Toyota's three-row Highlander SUV failed to move up in the rankings. This is because of the launch of the larger Grand Highlander modification on the American market. It will continue to try to encroach on this segment in the coming years.
Subaru Outback
Units sold: 161 814
The Outback received a minor update in its 2023 model, and the development of the all-wheel drive wagon continued this year. Therefore, the growth of the model cannot be called significant, although it still deserves a place in the top.
