Which electric cars will last less than conventional ones: anti-rating from experts

Electric cars are not the most practical form of transportation, at least if there is no possibility of regular recharging. However, these cars can be more attractive to consumers than gasoline or diesel models because of their low environmental impact. But how reliable are they?

There are some myths that electric cars break down faster than conventional cars, but this is largely untrue. GoBankingRates talked to automotive experts to find out which electric cars are really not reliable. There were few of them.

Tesla Model X

Joyce Anne Gutierrez, an expert at 4WheelOnline, warns that the Model X is not without its problems.

"One of the most common is that the battery drains quickly, which can be frustrating for owners who rely on their cars for daily use," Gutierrez said.

The Tesla Model X has a range of 560 km, which is above average for electric cars, but if you drive long distances every day, it will be too short. Moreover, the battery has only 240 thousand kilometers or eight years of warranty.

The problems with the Tesla Model X do not end there.

"In addition, some owners have noticed strange noises from the suspension system, which has caused concern and potentially indicated the need for maintenance or repair," Gutierrez said.

In 2022, Tesla even decided to reduce the price of the Model X due to reliability issues.

Hyundai Kona Electric

The Hyundai Kona is slightly cheaper than the Model X. However, the high maintenance costs will negate any savings.

This SUV has a range of only 420 km. Owners have noted mechanical problems with the electric motor and battery, which will definitely be expensive to repair or replace. Experts also report difficulties with charging, including slow speed or even complete inability to charge.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford Mustang Mach-E has a range of 363 to 500 km. An important disadvantage that buyers complain about is battery problems.

"Some owners have experienced problems with battery drain or sudden range drops," Gutierrez summarized.

Electric vehicles rely on efficient cooling systems to maintain optimal performance and prevent overheating. However, there have been reports that the Ford Mustang Mach-E has issues with temperature control, which could affect its durability and performance.

Smart EQ Fortwo

This tiny EV is easy to park, but that's one of its few advantages. According to John Ellmore of ElectricCarGuide, the range is so short (90 km on average) that buyers have reported having to constantly recharge their car throughout the day.

"Frequent recharging of an electric car battery can affect how quickly it discharges," Elmore said.

Repeated fast charging and deep discharging can contribute to faster deterioration of the battery over time.
