Which cars became the best-selling in the world in 2024: statistics

The first quarter of the new year is a good time to summarize the results of the previous year. For example, analysts have already calculated exactly which car models were the most popular in 2024.

The authoritative portal Statista collected data on new car sales and identified the top ten most popular models. To do this, experts tabulated the number of cars purchased around the world. Although most of the positions in the list were taken by cars with internal combustion engines, the first place was taken by an electric car.

The best-selling car in 2024 was the Tesla Model Y. Total global sales of the model reached 1.09 million units. According to preliminary data, more than 77 million new cars were sold worldwide in 2024.

The second line with a rather small gap went to the main hit of the Japanese car brand Toyota, the compact Corolla model. Its sales reached 1.08 million units. It is noteworthy that another model of the same manufacturer took the third position. The Toyota RAV4 secured the "bronze" in the ranking. It also crossed the one million mark in sales worldwide with 1.02 million units.

Toyota is consistently among the most expensive automotive brands in the global automotive sector. As of June 2024, it was second only to Tesla, beating other competitors such as Mercedes-Benz or Honda.

The Ford F-Series large pickup truck has taken the top spot due to its popularity in North America. A total of 0.9 million of these vehicles were purchased. The top five is rounded out by another Japanese car, the Honda CR-V compact crossover. It accounted for 0.74 million sales.

The top ten most popular cars also include the Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup truck (0.64 million), Hyundai Tucson compact crossover (0.61 million), Toyota Camry car (0.58 million), Chinese electric SUV BYD Song (0.57 million) and Volkswagen Tiguan compact SUV (0.54 million).
