Tourists are increasingly going beyond their financial plans when traveling, with record levels of overspending over the past decade. While many families are struggling to keep up with planned spending amid general inflation, only a third of travelers are able to stick to their budgets.

As a result, the number of requests to debt support services is growing. Travel and Tour World reminded of the importance of realistic financial plans, especially in countries where costs are often underestimated.

Finland is the leader in cost overruns

The largest budget overrun is recorded in Finland, where tourist spending is significantly higher than expected. Instead of the planned 124 euros per day, tourists spend about 178 euros, which amounts to an additional 379 euros per week. Despite its high cost, Finland remains a popular destination, especially in winter, thanks to its natural wonders, such as the northern lights and Lapland resorts.

The main expenses in Finland are related to high prices for food, accommodation and transportation. Alcohol prices are particularly high here, which sets the country apart from other European countries. For example, half a liter of beer costs about 7 euros. These aspects make Finland expensive for many tourists who underestimate the budget for this country.

Mexico: the expected budget does not correspond to reality

Mexico is the second most overspent country, where tourists spend 45% more than planned. Although travelers expect to spend 80 euros per day, the average expenditure reaches 127 euros. Fluctuations in the peso, which has strengthened by 16% in recent years, make budgeting difficult.

Egypt: cost overruns due to underestimation of expenses

Egypt, which is known for its affordable prices, was third in the ranking of overspending. Here, tourists exceed the planned budget of 25 euros, spending an average of 68 euros per day. This is due to inflation and an increase in tourist flows that have raised prices locally.

Expensive destinations: Norway and Japan

Tourists also often go over budget in Norway and Japan, spending 41 and 40 euros more per day, respectively. Norway has high prices for products and services, and Japan has high prices for transportation and food, which makes traveling there much more expensive.

Where tourists spend less than they planned

On the contrary, there are places where travelers often spend less than planned. For example, in Barbados, tourists plan a budget of 233 euros, but the actual cost is 142 euros. The island offers budget accommodation options and local cuisine, which can significantly reduce costs.

Budget destinations: Hong Kong and Luxembourg

In Hong Kong, where tourists plan to spend 130 euros, the actual cost is reduced to 79 euros. Here, tourists often choose affordable options, such as local markets. Luxembourg also surprised travelers – thanks to free transportation and discounts, tourists spend 72 euros less.

Travel cost overrun trends

The high level of travel overspending is related to global factors such as inflation and currency fluctuations. Budget destinations are becoming less accessible, which affects travel behavior and the need for accurate budgeting. For tourists planning international travel, it is important to take into account real costs and plan the budget more flexibly.
