Where to go on vacation in the fall: 10 most beautiful cities in Europe
Autumn is the best time to travel to old European cities. The active vacation season is ending, there are fewer and fewer tourists on the streets, the weather is pleasantly cool, and nature flashes with farewell colorful beauty.
During the velvet season, Europe offers trips for every taste: from the sunny southern islands to the autumn gloom of the forests in the north. Travel experts have revealed the top 10 best options for an autumn trip.
Seville, Spain
In October, hot Seville finally reaches a comfortable temperature of +23 +26°C. This is ideal for city tourism and sightseeing. The heat has subsided, but it is still warm enough for evening and night walks along the Guadalquivir River. There is a lot to see here. Especially worth visiting is the Alcazar, an amazing royal palace complex. In addition, there is the world's largest Gothic cathedral with its majestic bell tower, the exquisite tiled mansion Casa de Pilatos, and several excellent museums. Don't miss the Museo del Baile Flamenco, where you can learn all about this passionate, colorful dance and watch a live performance.
Dodecanese, Greece
Early fall is great on the Dodecanese: the southeastern group of islands is cozy, warm, inexpensive, and almost completely devoid of tourists. The Dodecanese is ideal for walking, thanks to good ferry connections between the islands (including neighboring Turkey) and a network of small boats that serve the smaller islands. Rhodes is a large, interesting island with a long history. Authentic Karpathos has managed to preserve its strong traditional culture in the face of globalization. Don't miss Olympos, a hilltop village that looks like a living museum of folklore.
Umbria, Italy
Umbria is worth a trip for gastronomic tourism. In the fall, it is the harvest season. Try local specialties such as black truffles, and dishes with aromatic saffron and olio novello. A variety of cacciagione dishes fill the menus of local restaurants, including cinghiale and fagiano. The grape harvest is in full swing, so it's a great time to follow the Strada del Sagrantino wine routes, visiting vineyards and medieval villages for tastings. In November, the capital of Umbria, Perugia, hosts Eurochocolate, a chocolate festival.
Montenegro
Don't pack your hiking boots just yet - thanks to its southern latitude, Montenegro's mountains remain an ideal place for autumn walks. The highest ones are in the Durmitor National Park, which is included in the UNESCO list. High points along the coast, such as the Oren and Lovcen mountains, offer stunning views of the Adriatic. Combine hiking with diving into the azure sea, which is quite comfortable in the fall. A week-long walk can include climbing Mount Rumija on the southern coast, hiking the Kucka Krajina ridge near the capital Podgorica, and admiring the autumn colors around Mount Belasica in Biogradska Gora.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Cool Copenhagen is the epitome of both the Scandinavian architectural tradition and the new Scandinavian food revolution. Nowhere is there more creative and sustainable seasonal food. After wandering through the autumnal fire gardens of Rosenborg Slot, exploring Viking treasures at the National Museum, and enjoying amazing art in the galleries, be sure to visit Torvehallerne KBH, Copenhagen's food market.
The Scottish Highlands
Fog, moorland, fields glowing in the dawn light - October mornings in the Scottish Highlands have a real autumnal feel. And while it may be chilly, note that the tourist season is over, making it a good time for some relaxed sightseeing: Sterling, Eileen Donan Castle, Glen Coe, Fort William. Warm up with the drama and enjoy the fantastic seasonal food: Scottish oysters and lobster, as well as an abundance of pheasants, grouse, and other games.
Malta
Little Malta has a beautiful Mediterranean climate - it is still very warm in November. The average temperature is +21°C (70°F) and the sea is still warm enough for swimming. Combine a seaside vacation with some sightseeing. Spend time exploring the UNESCO-listed capital of Valletta and the former walled capital of Mdina, known as the "Silent City."
Malta is a country of churches, museums, and medieval alleyways. Visit the ancient underground burial chambers of the Hypogean Hal Saflieni and the prehistoric cliff-top temples of Hagar Kim and Mnajdra.
Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain
Tenerife welcomes sun lovers all year round - the average daytime temperature remains at +24°C until November. Major tourist resorts are located in the south. It is better to head north instead, perhaps to the historic city of Puerto de la Cruz or to the beaches around Los Gigantes and Puerto de Santiago in the west. At 3718 meters, Mount Teide is the highest peak in Spain and the third largest volcano in the world. It is a challenging five-hour hike (or short cable car ride) to its snow-capped summit.
Latvia.
October is a great time to wander around Latvia's amazing corners in warm weather: the days are still reasonable, the winter winds have not yet begun to blow, and the autumn colors are strikingly bright. Head to the Gauja National Park, where you can admire medieval castles and misty waterways against the backdrop of yellow and golden trees. Alternatively, head to Kemeri National Park for a walk through this unique environment. Both parks are within easy reach of the capital Riga.
Burgundy, France
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the two grape varieties that dominate France's most revered wine region, where viticultural heritage dates back to the Roman Empire. Explore the rolling hills of Burgundy during the vendange (grape harvest) season and enjoy the perfect riding conditions on Le Tour de Bourgogne. This cycling circuit consists of about 800 km of voies vertes (green roads), canal paths, and quiet countryside trails connecting the region's most attractive sights. Visit Dijon, the impressive Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices in Beaune, the ancient monastery complex of the Abbey de Fontaine, and the castles of Annecy-le-Franc and Tanle.
