Where to escape from snow and rain in Europe: the best destinations

Winter is a wonderful time of year: snow, Christmas tree lights, and Christmas markets create an atmosphere of celebration and wonder. However, winter also means cold, rain, and piercing winds that make you want to hide from. Who doesn't miss the warmth and sunshine?

Southern Europe offers plenty of sunshine and moderate (if not quite tropical) temperatures. What's more, traveling off-season means that housing and car rentals can be more affordable. Experts told us about the best destinations for winter travel.

Algarve, Portugal

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year and 87 beaches, the Algarve is becoming an increasingly popular winter vacation destination. This is the season when waterfalls come to life in the eucalyptus-filled Monchique Mountains and migratory birds flock to the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Even the popular Quinta do Lago beach is blissfully quiet this time of year. If you can withstand sea temperatures up to 14°C, this is also a good season for surfing.

Malta

Malta can be too hot in the summer. So the winter months are ideal for traveling to this Mediterranean island nation. Climbing and hiking are particularly enjoyable in the off-season, as the countryside is at its greenest during this time. Culture and history lovers should see the dawn of the winter solstice on December 22 at the Mnajdra Temple, where the sun illuminates the precise edges of the ancient megalith. In February, the Malta Carnival will bring numerous parades and night parties.

Sicily, Italy

Magical Sicily is full of bright colors in winter. Citrus fruits are ripening. The stalls of the food markets in Catania and Palermo creak under the weight of fresh vegetables, fish, and seasonal walnuts. And all over the island, locals are preparing for Carnival (the most famous Carnevale Acireale festival will be held in 2025 from February 16 to March 4).

Cyprus

With more than 340 days of sunshine a year, Cyprus is a top choice for warm winters in Europe. While snow glistens on the tops of the Troodos Mountains, the coastal areas, especially in the east, remain warm and dry. In Larnaca, you can see flamingos on a salt lake. Heading to the west of the island, you can explore historical treasures such as the Tombs of the Kings of the 3rd century BC and the ancient Curion.

Balearic Islands, Spain

These Spanish islands are no less attractive in winter. In Ibiza, noisy rhythms and party crowds will disappear, but you can watch incredible sunsets on the beaches. Mallorca is quieter and cheaper. Menorca, which is less visited, attracts nature lovers with favorable weather for walks along the Cami de Cavalls coast, while tiny Formentera beckons those who want complete privacy. Relatively moderate sea temperatures allow diving around the Balearic Islands all year round.

Madeira, Portugal

Mild winters are standard in Madeira, a Portuguese archipelago about 500 km north of the Canary Islands. The temperature here rarely drops below 14°C, which is why the climate is called "eternal spring". If you prefer land, Madeira's uneven terrain is ideal for hiking. Follow the path along the ancient network of canals that distributed water around the island for centuries. It is also worth visiting the luxurious palace of Belmond Reid in Funchal.
