A microwave oven is an indispensable item in the home. However, few people think about the fact that you need to choose the right place for the appliance. It may seem that the choice is limited only by the availability of space, but it is important to prioritize safety.

Being close to certain appliances can affect performance or even create a fire hazard. Experts told us where not to put a microwave in the kitchen.

Where not to put the microwave

The microwave should not be placed

  • near a water source;
  • in a place with limited ventilation;
  • near other major electrical appliances such as stoves, televisions, or radios.

Hisense experts emphasized that you should avoid placing microwaves above the stove, as the oven can be exposed to steam, grease, and heat from cooking - this can damage the appliance over time and create a potential safety hazard.

Water splashes can damage the appliance, but this is not the only risk. Proximity to water increases the risk of electric shock.

A closed cabinet will result in a lack of air circulation, which can cause the microwave to overheat and potentially lead to a fire.

Where to place the microwave

Experts say there are five main aspects to consider when placing a microwave oven:

  • accessibility
  • proximity to power outlets;
  • ventilation
  • efficiency of the workflow;
  • free space.

"Place the microwave at a height that is easy to access and in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions," recommends Craig Nold, chief microwave adjustment engineer at GE Appliances.

In general, it is ideal to position the appliance from the waist up to eye level to avoid spills or burns when carrying hot food.

Make sure that there is enough space around the microwave, especially on the sides and back, for proper ventilation.

A built-in microwave can be installed at a convenient height next to the oven or cooking area, as this minimizes the distance you have to carry the hot food.

It is also important to consider structural support. Make sure that the cabinet or built-in housing can support the weight of the microwave, especially when it is in use. Measure the space to ensure that the microwave fits in the intended area, observing the manufacturer's specified clearances for proper ventilation. With a built-in microwave, you will need access for maintenance and cleaning.
