For fans of the "Shrek" cartoon series who are waiting for the release of the fifth installment, Universal Pictures has prepared some not-so-pretty news. According to the new premiere schedule, the release of the sequel is postponed.

According to THR, DreamWorks Animation will be able to complete work on "Shrek 5" by December 23, 2026, instead of releasing it in early July as previously planned. However, the animation team has not changed. Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are the main directors of the film, and Brad Ableson is the co-director. Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri are producing the new "Shrek," and the main stars of the franchise, Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona), will return to voice acting.

The slot where the cartoon about the green ogre was planned to be released will now be occupied by the third part of "Minions." It is the threequel of the Illumination studio's hit that is due to be released in cinemas on July 1, 2026. The film will be released a year earlier than planned, as it was previously announced for June 30, 2027. Pierre Coffin, who directed the first three "Despicable Me" films and the first spin-off, "Minions," is directing the project. The screenwriter is Brian Lynch. Coffin also provides the voice of all the yellow pranksters who will have new adventures. In June 2027, Illumination will release an untitled novelty from the company.

As you know, the release of Shrek 5 is timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the franchise's debut, which started in 2001. The adventures of the ogre and his friends have brought the studio more than $2.9 billion at the global box office. The last movie to be released was "Shrek Forever After," back in 2010. The cartoon also spawned two spinoffs about "Puss in Boots," with Antonio Banderas as the main character.
