When the Christmas fast begins according to the new calendar: the date
With the transition to the New Julian calendar, the dates of all church holidays have shifted. Orthodox believers will now celebrate Christmas on December 25.
Consequently, the dates of the Christmas fast, which previously began at the end of November, have also changed. OBOZ.UA has determined when the Christmas fast begins according to the new calendar.
The Christmas fast has long been known as Pylypivka. It is one of the longest fasts of the year, lasting for 40 days.
During the fast, believers prepare for the joyous holiday of Christmas. Following the church reform and the transition to the New Julian calendar, the dates of all holidays shifted by 13 days.
The Christmas fast in 2023 will commence on November 15 and conclude on December 24. For those who observe fasting, this change is quite convenient, as previously the fast continued until January 6, requiring them to fast even during the New Year holidays. Now, the fast will conclude before the New Year.
Accordingly, on November 14, there will be Zagovyny, which believers refer to as the last day before Lent.
Lent isn't solely about dietary restrictions, such as abstaining from eggs, dairy products, and animal-based foods. During the fast, the primary emphasis is on the spiritual purification of individuals.
People in poor health should avoid fasting if abstaining from specific foods could harm their bodies. Likewise, individuals living in challenging conditions for whom fasting is impractical should refrain from fasting.
