When is the best time to go to Turkey: 7 best vacation destinations
Turkey is an affordable and interesting vacation destination. Its rich history, lively cities, coastal activities, ancient historical fortresses, and local flavor make it a very popular destination for tourists.
From cosmopolitan Istanbul and the capital Ankara to favorite beach resorts such as Bodrum, Alanya, and Marmaris, Turkey offers vacations for every budget and taste. If you're planning a trip to Turkey, the Independent has published a ranking of the best destinations.
Istanbul
The most populous city in Europe is located where Europe meets Asia. The city, which has been the capital of three different empires, has over 2500 years of history, and its main attractions include Byzantine structures such as Hagia Sophia and the towering minarets of the Ottoman-era Blue Mosque.
Other popular tourist spots include the Topkapi Palace, the Cistern Basilica, and a visit to the Sultanahmet district. The city's famous Grand Bazaar, the Bosphorus, and the surrounding area, including Balat and Fener, are worth seeing, and for a great view of the city, try climbing the Galata Tower. June and September are the most pleasant times to visit Istanbul.
Bodrum
Bodrum is a destination that is popular among those who want to get a taste of Turkish vacation. The city was once known as Halicarnassus (it was here that the mausoleum was located, which was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world). Bodrum has ancient ruins as well as its own famous medieval fortress. Away from the sights, there is lively nightlife with a mix of bars and clubs in the city, on the beaches, and in the marina area.
However, most tourists flock here to access some of Turkey's best beaches. The surrounding region is a picturesque mix of charming villages, green hills, and quiet marinas, as well as dozens of beaches with fine golden sand and clear turquoise water.
Cappadocia
A visit to the Cappadocia region will be unlike any other trip. Cappadocia has a characteristic topography formed by soft volcanic rocks, volcanic activity, and erosion, which has caused a variety of rock formations – the so-called "fairy chimneys" (rock spires and caves). Many of these caves now function as charming hotels with rooms carved into the rock and restaurants serving colorful local dishes.
The most popular activity is a hot air balloon ride, which offers unforgettable views of enchanting landscapes and orange sunsets. The main cities in the region include Avanos, Goreme, Uchisar, and Urgup.
Antalya
Antalya has kilometers of sea coastline, ruins of ancient cities (including Perge, Aspendos, and Termessos), and a variety of entertainment (Belek is well known for its golf courses). The old town (Kaleici) is a maze of narrow asphalt streets, Ottoman architecture, and ancient walls, and the marina and harbor areas offer sea views. There are also many places for family recreation, including a zoo, aquarium, and water park.
Near the city are the Duden and Kursunlu waterfalls, and the Taurus Mountains offer hiking opportunities. Cirali, Konyaalti, and Patara are some of the best beaches in the region where you can soak up the sun and relax.
Izmir
Turkey's third most populous city may not be on the popular tourist itineraries, but this coastal center has a rich history. Nearby are first-class beaches in places like Cesme, Alacati, and Urla, and in Izmir itself, you'll find a 20th-century clock tower, the Agora, and Kadifekale (an ancient castle). At the fair, visitors can enjoy a mixture of Turkish, Greek, and Aegean cuisine.
Kas
A popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, it is located between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, and the Lycian Way hiking route runs close to the town, providing opportunities for a variety of activities, including kayaking, scuba diving, and paragliding.
Oludeniz
The main attraction is the Blue Lagoon, an idyllic bay where azure waters are surrounded by curved stretches of white sand on green hills. Oludeniz Beach is a popular spot for swimming and water sports, ranging from water skiing to snorkeling, and there are many other beaches in the nearby Kidrak National Park.
Away from the sea, Mount Babadag has a number of hiking trails and is a popular paragliding spot, offering panoramic views of the Blue Lagoon and other areas. The area around the village is a nature reserve, offering unspoiled landscapes and a peaceful atmosphere.
