When is the best time to go to Mallorca: tips for tourists

Alina MilsentNews

Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, attracts tourists with its picturesque beaches, rich cultural heritage, and diverse entertainment. Choosing the best time to vacation depends on your preferences for weather and entertainment. In the off-season, the sea is still warm, there are fewer tourists on the beaches, and rental prices are slightly lower. It's a great time for excursions, nature walks, and relaxation.

Mallorca has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. Lonely Planet experts told us when it's best to go to Mallorca.

June through August

During the high season (June to August), the beaches are crowded with tourists, and prices for accommodation and services reach their peak. If you like hot weather and active nightlife, this time will be perfect.

In the summer, the island hosts numerous music festivals, theater performances and open-air night movies.

The temperature ranges from 28°C to 35°C. The Mediterranean Sea warms up well, making this time of year ideal for swimming. June and July are the driest months. In July, weather forecasters count 346 hours of sunshine, but the sea breeze helps to cool the island, and the morning and evening temperatures are quite pleasant for walking.

Summer is the peak tourist season in Mallorca, and popular places like Magaluf, Playa de Palma, and Palma's Old Town are usually crowded. Summer is the best time to visit the island if you like beach clubs, bars, and a lively nightlife.

On June 23, the locals celebrate Nit de Foc, the night of fire, dedicated to the summer solstice. It's a night of fireworks, costume carnivals, bonfires on the beaches, and parties until dawn.

In July, Mallorca celebrates the Day of the Virgin Carmen, honoring the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. In August, you should buy tickets in advance for the magnificent Chopin Festival, where world-famous pianists perform under the starry sky at the Real Cartuja in Valldemos.

There's also Cinema a la Fresca, a program of free outdoor movie screenings in public parks in August. For a unique experience, you can choose the Marxa des Güell a Lluc a Peu, a traditional candlelit pilgrimage walk from Palma to the sanctuary of the Lluc, high in the Tramuntana Mountains.

Due to the sunny weather and rich cultural calendar, Mallorca receives more tourists in summer than at any other time of the year, and accommodation and airfare can be significantly more expensive.

Off-season

April, May, September, and October are the off-season in Mallorca. The weather remains warm and pleasant, but there are fewer tourists. The air temperature is around 20°C - 25°C, which is suitable for beach holidays and excursions. This is the optimal period for those looking for a balance between comfortable temperatures and fewer people.

Autumn on the island is harvest time, and locals celebrate the grape harvest in September with three weeks of festivities in the village of Binissalem for Festes de la Verema.

Early fall is still pleasant for swimming and water sports, although thunderstorms are quite common in late August. October is usually the wettest month, but it refreshes the vegetation after a dry summer.

It's worth visiting Nit de l'Art in the third week of September, when Palma's museums and art galleries open their doors to the public for a gala evening of art, exhibitions, performances and more.

Low season

The low season lasts from November to April. Temperatures drop, especially at night, and frequent rains are possible. This period is suitable for those who want to avoid the crowds and enjoy a relaxing vacation, as well as for lovers of active tourism, such as hiking in the Tramuntana Mountains.

In winter, Palma twinkles with festive lights, and Christmas markets are held along Passeig d'es Born, the city's most attractive boulevard. But winters in Mallorca are mild compared to most parts of Europe, with daytime temperatures between 12°C and 17°C. Despite the fact that this is the wettest time of the year, it does not rain constantly, only occasionally there are showers.
