The significance of Mother Earth Day

Earth Day aims to draw attention to environmental issues and remind us of the need for responsible attitude to natural resources. It unites people from all over the world in joint efforts to protect the planet.

This holiday is unique because it not only emphasizes the importance of environmental issues, but also encourages people to take action. When is Earth Day celebrated and what is its exceptional role?

History of Mother Earth Day

The founder of the holiday is an American public figure, John Morton. In the 1840s, he launched a campaign aimed at planting trees and shrubs in an effort to draw people's attention to the importance of preserving and caring for the environment. Morton organized an event where participants planted trees, and those who planted the most received prizes.

The idea so captivated its author that when he became Nebraska's secretary of state in 1872, he proposed creating a special day dedicated to greening. It was held in the third week of April and was called Arbor Day.

People loved the holiday so much that since 1882 it has been celebrated annually on Morton's birthday, April 22. In 1970, Earth Day became an international holiday, but it was only in 1990 that this date received its current name, International Earth Day.

Officially, Mother Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 2010. The initiators of the celebration of this date were the members of the UN General Assembly, and the decision to introduce it was made in a resolution in 2009.
