What to see in the city with a demonic name: exploring Sataniv in Khmelnytskyi region
Sataniv is a village in Ukraine, the center of the Satanivska settlement territorial community of Khmelnytskyi district, Khmelnytskyi region. A balneological resort of Ukraine, it is an inconspicuous place dating back to 1404 that rarely attracts the attention of tourists. But in fact, the location is an underestimated treasure. It hides interesting and unique masterpieces of the past. So, read on to know what attractions are worth visiting.
Sataniv Castle
Located in the north on a hill near the Zbruch River. The date of construction of the building is unknown, but historian Mykola Petrov suggests that it was founded in the second half of the XV century - early XVI. According to a legend, the fortress was built by the feudal lords of Ondrovonzhi to protect the settlement from Turkish-Tatar raids.
Between 1895 and 2005, a sugar factory operated here, which at the time was among the ten best in Ukraine. To build it, workers used stones from the fortress walls.
We also advise you to go to the powder tower, which has been standing here since the times of Kyivan Rus. It is located very close by.
Synagogue
The monument was founded around 1532 in the Gothic and Renaissance styles and is considered one of the oldest in Eastern Europe. In 1754, it was reconstructed and equipped with an aron kodesh, a special niche for storing Torah scrolls (the Old Testament of the Bible). It is said that the prophet Moses wrote down the Holy Scriptures directly from the "mouth" of God.
An interesting fact is that the synagogue once served as a defense structure.
By the way, in the 1960s and 1970s, a grain warehouse operated here. The attraction was restored in the 2000s. Here, travelers will see carved wooden cabinets, benches, marble floors, etc. We also recommend going up to the top of the building. Here are the loopholes from which the enemy was fired upon.
There is a legend that there is a road straight to Jerusalem under the synagogue.
Jewish cemetery
It is located outside the city on a wedge-shaped hill. The place for burial was chosen carefully, based on Jewish beliefs. The cemetery was built on a high hill so that people would not try to get there as soon as possible. After all, it is not easy to climb up. And its location behind a stream symbolizes the border that separates the living from the dead.
Here, tourists will see carved tombstones from the 16th century. They bear the names and dates of birth and death of the first Jewish residents of Sataniv.
City Gate
A building with a characteristic Renaissance and Baroque decor. It was built on the site where the southern entrance to Sataniv was once located.
When the attraction ceased to fulfill its defensive function, its purpose changed several times. Due to the strategic location of the settlement, the customs office was located here for some time. Later, it was converted into a warehouse for agricultural products, as evidenced by the remains of fossilized salt. Later, the building was used as a stable.
Holy Trinity Monastery
Its history dates back to the early seventeenth century. It functioned not only as a religious center but also as a center of unique culture.
It was here that lyricism, the art of wandering singers, flourished, telling through their songs about Cossack glory, religious events, and everyday life. Musicians sang, played instruments, and passed their craft from generation to generation. Their performances usually took place near the churches and graves of the Cossacks.
The monastery is famous for the remains of tempera painting. An interesting fact: more than three thousand years ago, ancient Egyptian artists decorated the walls of tombs and sarcophagi with this dye.
Park Arden
Not a historical location, but no less interesting. The rehabilitation center is located on the territory of the Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park and is the largest in Ukraine. It is home to more than 20 bears, as well as wolves and foxes. There is an observation bridge on the site where you can watch the animals.
