Bed is the place where each of us spends a significant part of our lives, and sleep is one of the most important components of health, and our well-being, mood, and productivity depend on its quality.

But sometimes the place that should give comfort and peace of mind becomes a source of unpleasant sounds. Toms Guide tells you what to do about it.

Fortunately, most causes of bed squeaks are easy to fix if you know where to look for the problem. However, if your bed or mattress is old and beyond repair, you may want to consider upgrading it.

Turn the mattress

The first step is to check if your mattress is the cause of the squeaking. Turn it 180 degrees to ensure that the filler is evenly distributed. It is advisable to perform this procedure every three months even if the mattress does not squeak. This will help to keep it in good condition and avoid sagging.

Tighten loose screws and bolts

Loose screws and bolts are often the cause of a squeaky bed. Remove the mattress and check all the connections on the frame. Use a screwdriver or hex key to tighten them, but don't overdo it as overtightening can damage the structure.

Lubricate metal parts

If you have a metal frame, the squeak may be caused by the parts rubbing against each other. Use a lubricant, such as WD-40, to treat joints and moving parts. After lubricating, be sure to wipe off any excess grease to avoid dust from sticking.

Check the levelness of the bed frame

Unevenness in the floor or the frame itself can cause squeaking. Make sure the bed is level on the floor. If not, you can place pieces of wood or cardboard under the legs.

Put something soft under the bed

Squeaking can be caused by the slats rubbing against the frame or each other. Use old socks or towels as a buffer between them. This will create a sound-absorbing cushion and reduce squeaking.

Repair the box spring

If your bed has a box spring base, check the condition of the box springs. Replace any weakened or broken springs. If the squeak is caused by friction between wooden parts, you can apply beeswax or a bar of soap to the joints.

Try using a mattress cover

A mattress topper can help absorb the noise created by squeaky springs or slats. It adds an extra layer, creating a buffer zone that reduces the load on the frame.
