Make Up magazine claims that square-shaped nails are the weakest. Sarah Gibson Tuttle, a nail expert and CEO of Olive & June, told us which shapes break the least and how to strengthen weak nails.

The most reliable nail shape

Round and oval shapes are more resistant to brittleness. "Think round, oval, and almond-shaped nails. Round nails or soft oval-shaped manicures are the most resistant to breaking because there are no sharp corners that can become vulnerable," Tuttle explains. In addition, these shapes have various advantages. Round, oval, and almond shapes make fingers look longer than they actually are. Soft oval nails are simple but elegant, and if you make them as short as possible, they won't break.

Despite their popularity, square nails are more likely to break due to their straight shape. This is especially likely to happen if you prefer long nails.

"If you break your nail, it's best to smooth out any rough edges as soon as possible to prevent further breakage," Tuttle says. She suggests taking a nail file and moving it in one direction while creating a natural nail shape. "If the crack extends into the nail bed, it may be time to see a doctor as this can lead to infection," the expert adds.

How to strengthen your nails without giving up the square shape

If you don't want to give up on your square nails, Tuttle has some tips on how to avoid brittleness. "Your cuticle is the guarantor of nail strength," she says, so it's important to use a cuticle oil or serum daily.

"Don't file your nail too hard as this thins your nail plate," she notes. "The stronger your nails are, the less likely they are to break.
