What Kyiv was like in the 1970s: interesting historical photos
From a historical perspective, 50 years is not a long time. But in terms of the life of one particular city, it can be a whole era. And this is convincingly proved by vintage photos of Kyiv.
The "Kyiv Historical" Telegram channel has posted several pictures dating back to the 1970s. They show the Ukrainian capital in several guises at once: historical, archaic, and futuristic.

The images of the central streets of Saksahanskoho (above) and Ivan Mazepa convincingly prove that Kyiv has always been a true metropolis. They show modern public transportation, such as a tram and a bus, as well as parked cars against the backdrop of beautiful tall buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. At the same time, the roadway on these streets was already quite spacious, which was a necessity for a truly important city, which Kyiv was and still is.

And this is Vozdvyzhenska Street, which connects Podil with the upper city. Here we see old wooden houses with 1-2 floors and a narrow cobblestone street. In the Middle Ages, this was the site of a craftsmen's quarter. Later on, poor townspeople settled here. This is clearly seen in the buildings that have survived until the seventies. Now, in their place is the modern Vozdvyzhenka neighborhood, which is loved by creative young people.

In the seventies, Kyiv was developing rapidly and new neighborhoods were being actively built. This is clearly seen in the photo of Obolon. You can see a lot of typical Soviet-panelized new buildings. You can also see a modernist glass building that houses public services such as a tailoring studio and a canteen. We also captured the entrance to an underground passage that crosses the wide Yordanska Street. However, there were not many cars here at that time – Obolon had not yet been completed and fully populated.
